Evidence of the guide field magnetic reconnection in the flapping current sheet

  • The observations of the current sheet flapping motion by MMS spacecraft on 27 August 2018 in the dusk flank magnetotail are reported. We present the first study of the guide field reconnection in the flux rope embedded in the kink-like flapping current sheets near the dusk-side flank magnetotail. Unlike the normal magnetotail symmetric reconnection, this asymmetric small-scale (λi ~ 650 km) reconnections are found in the highly twisted current sheet with the current sheet normal direction changing from the Z direction into the Y direction. The unique feature for this unusual reconnection is that the reconnection jets are along the Z direction. It is different from the magnetotail normal reconnection outflow in the X direction. This vertical reconnection jet is parallel or antiparallel the up-and-down motion of the tail current sheet. The normalized reconnection rate R is estimated to be ~ 0.1. Our results indicate that the asymmetric reconnection can enlarge the current sheet flapping with large oscillation amplitude. This letter presents a direct evidence of the guide field reconnection in the highly twisted current sheet and the reconnection outflow enlarging the current sheet flapping.
